I see two common routes people take to find calling and purpose. One is sincerity and passion. This path can bring us down roads no one has been down. Reason and planning have little cause here. “Just follow your heart!”

The second is apprenticeship - the student. Purpose is determined from calculated goals and success is achieved by careful steps and reasoned decisions. “You can do anything you put your mind to!”

At 1 Samuel 3:10, these two paths collide. Sam does exactly what his journeyman (Eli) tells him to, and he does it with the utmost sincerity.
